Blue Mind at the Marina: A Quiet Morning at Harbormaster Park

There’s a particular kind of stillness that settles over the water just before the sun fully claims the sky. This morning, I sat at the end of the dock at Harbormaster Park in St. Augustine and watched it happen in real time.

The darkness slowly lifted into deep blues and soft lavenders, then warmed into gentle golds and pinks. Boat owners from up and down the coast stirred on their vessels — some preparing to cast off for the next leg of their journey, others simply taking in the same quiet spectacle. Fishing boats pulled in for fuel. The Bridge of Lions lifted its arms to let a few early travelers pass. And on the lines nearby, egrets balanced with patient precision, dipping down now and then to pluck a small fish from the surface.

It was ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of “Blue Mind” from the book of the same name by Wallace J. Nichols — that calm, mildly meditative state we enter when we’re near, in, or on the water. It’s the opposite of the overstimulated, anxious “Red Mind” that so often defines our days. This morning felt like a living example of it. The gentle lap of water against the pilings, the soft movement of boats, the unhurried rhythm of people and birds beginning their day — it all seemed to slow something inside me.

I didn’t go there with a specific shot in mind. I went to be present. The camera simply became a way of paying closer attention. Sometimes the best photographs emerge not from chasing a preconceived image, but from allowing yourself to be shaped by the place and the moment.

These are the kinds of mornings that remind me why I’m drawn to this work. Not every image needs to be dramatic or monumental. Some simply need to hold a feeling — the feeling of water, light, and quiet possibility.

If you’ve ever sat by the water and felt your shoulders drop without realizing it, you know what I mean.
